Passacaglia Lacrimosa

for trombone and percussion
completed April 2026
duration: ~8’00”
written for Talea Ensemble for the Twin Cities New Music Festival

Program Note

Shortly before I finished this piece, I learned of the death of one of my neighbors, who was murdered in a senseless act of violence. He was a good man, steadfast and sincere, hungry and thirsty for justice. My sorrow at his death, memory of his life, and pride in the response of our community reshaped the direction of the piece. Listener: love your neighbor, for the days are evil, and you know not when one may depart from this world and all you will be able to do for them is to write songs dedicated to their memory. This one’s for you, Nelson.
